Let’s be honest for a second: running a small business or working as a sole trader is hard enough. Between chasing invoices, actually doing the work, and trying to have a life on the weekend, the last thing you want is another government acronym making your life difficult.
Lately, one specific acronym has been causing a lot of sleepless nights: MTD.
Making Tax Digital (MTD) for Income Tax Self Assessment (ITSA) is the biggest change to the UK tax system in a generation. If you’ve been scrolling through social media or reading the news, you might have seen some pretty scary headlines. It sounds complicated, it sounds expensive, and it sounds like a lot of extra paperwork.
In fact, we’ve spoken to plenty of people who are so fed up with the idea of it that they’re seriously considering packing it all in. They’re thinking of closing their doors, retiring early, or going back to a PAYE job just to avoid the "MTD nightmare."
But before you hand in your notice to yourself and close your business bank account, take a breath. At Makes Sense Accountants, we’ve seen these transitions before. It’s rarely as bad as the rumors suggest.
Here are 5 things you absolutely need to know before you decide to quit to avoid MTD.
1. The Thresholds Have Changed (You Might Have More Time Than You Think)
One of the biggest sources of stress is the feeling that MTD is a giant wave about to crash over everyone at once. That isn't actually the case. The government has pushed back the dates and adjusted the income thresholds several times.
As of right now, MTD for Income Tax applies to sole traders and landlords with a total business or property income above a certain level.
- From April 2026: It hits those with an income over £50,000.
- From April 2027: It expands to those with an income over £30,000.
If your total income is under these amounts, you can keep doing things the "old-fashioned" way for now. You don’t need to panic or close your business because you’re worried about rules that might not even apply to you yet.

Even if you are over the £50k mark, you still have time to get your ducks in a row. Closing a profitable business just to avoid a new filing system is a bit like selling your car because you don’t want to learn how to use a new SatNav. It’s a permanent solution to a temporary learning curve.
If you’re unsure where you sit, checking out our sole trader services can help you figure out your current standing.
2. "Digital Records" Doesn't Mean You Need to Be a Tech Genius
There’s a common myth that Making Tax Digital means you have to spend your evenings coding or mastering complex software that looks like something out of NASA.
In reality, "digital records" just means you can't keep your accounts in a physical shoebox or a handwritten ledger anymore. You need to use "functional compatible software."
For many sole traders, this actually makes life easier. Modern accounting software can link directly to your bank account. Instead of typing in every coffee you bought or every piece of material you purchased, the software "sees" the transaction. You just click a button to categorize it.

At Makes Sense Accountants, we specialize in a jargon-free approach. We don't expect you to be an IT expert. Our job is to help you find the simplest tool that works for you, so you can spend less time on your sole trader tax return help and more time doing what you actually get paid for.
3. Quarterly Updates are NOT "Four Tax Returns a Year"
This is the big one. We hear it all the time: "I can barely handle one tax return a year, how am I supposed to do four?"
It’s a massive misconception. Under MTD, you aren't doing four full tax returns. You are sending "Quarterly Updates." These are essentially summaries of your digital records for that three-month period. Because your software is already tracking your income and expenses (see point #2), sending the update is often just a matter of checking the numbers and clicking "send."
You don’t have to worry about complex tax adjustments, capital allowances, or final calculations every three months. Those still happen at the end of the year in your "Final Declaration."
The benefit? You’ll actually know how much tax you owe throughout the year. No more "January Heart Attack" when you realize you haven't saved enough for your tax bill. By seeing your figures quarterly, you can manage your cash flow much better.
4. The Cost of Closing vs. The Cost of Compliance
Before you close your shop, do the math.
Closing a business involves:
- Losing your source of income.
- Potential redundancy costs if you have staff.
- The hassle of closing a company tax-efficiently.
- Losing the brand and reputation you’ve spent years building.
On the flip side, the cost of MTD compliance is usually just a small monthly software subscription and perhaps a slightly different fee structure from your accountant.
When you weigh the loss of your livelihood against a few pounds a month and a change in habits, quitting usually looks like a very expensive mistake. Most people find that once they’ve set up their digital system, they actually save hours of time every month compared to their old manual systems. Those hours saved are money back in your pocket.

5. You Don’t Have to Do This Alone (And It Doesn't Have to Be Stressful)
The main reason people want to quit is because they feel overwhelmed. They feel like HMRC is piling more work onto their already full plates.
But you don’t have to be the one navigating the MTD portal or worrying about "API bridging software" and "digital links." That’s what we’re here for.
At Makes Sense Accountants, we take the "accountant-speak" and translate it into plain English. We’ve spent over 15 years helping people just like you navigate the changing tides of HMRC rules.
We provide MTD – Sole trader support that takes the pressure off. We can help you pick the right software, set it up so it talks to your bank, and even handle those quarterly updates for you.
Our goal is to make sure your business remains a source of pride and income, not a source of digital dread. We’re on your side, and we make sure the transition "makes sense."
